• South   Africa   as   part   of   the   global   community,   is   exposed   to external   influences.   this   has   opened   up   opportunities   for   local and     international     investors,     but     has     also     presented challenges    for    mining    industry    to    conform    to    international norms   and   standard   of   good   business   practice   in   order   to remain   competitive.   One   of   the   yard   sticks   commonly   used   to measure     good     business     practice     is     acceptable     OHS performance.    In    this    case,    it    is    not    just    results    that    are important, but also the process that precede the results. • Stakeholders   are   increasingly   demanding   that   organizations establish    a    system    of    internal    controls    that    utilize    a    risk- based   approach.   That   these   controls   are   frequently   reviewed for     effectiveness,     and     feedback     on     the     efficiency     and effectiveness   of   controls   is   publicly   disclosed.   This   is   known as   corporate   governance,   the   essence   of   which   is   to   protect the interest of all the stakeholders.
